A series of posters created in my Graphic Design II class for the City of Ithaca (NY) that simply and aesthetically consolidates weather information in one composition.
Ithaca is known for its long, snowy winters that bring frigid winds, freezing temperatures, cloudy skies and unpredictable snowfall. Ithaca is also surrounded by one of the Finger Lakes (Cayuga Lake), adding lake-effect blizzards to Ithaca’s climate, which are called squalls. Squalls are characterized by wind gusts of 30 mph, mixed with snow and temperatures in teens.
The goal of these posters was to communicate weather information simply, legibly and objectively. This was achieved by designing with mathematically constructed grids, unadorned presentation of content, and use of sans serif typeface. To emphasize readability, typography was used as a primary design element in addition to its use in text. The design techniques I used were inspired by the International Typographic Style or Swiss Style.
These posters were scheduled to be exhibited in Spring 2020 at Ithaca College’s Handwerker Gallery. Due to Covid-19, the exhibition has been canceled.
