In Graphic Design II Class, students were tasked to design a book cover only knowing the title of the book. The different titles were themed “Fears and Phobias.” Book titles were randomly assigned. I was assigned Selonophobia, which means fear of the moon. A constraint to this project was to design without the use of photographs or illustrations of the subject.
I began my research by brainstorming the words “selono” and “phobia.” Selono means the moon or moonlight and phobia is fear. I created word webs for each and tried to find thematic connections. From the word webs, I found a significant theme in the words “light” and “darkness/night.”
These four compositions incorporate the relationship between light and dark to signify fear of the moonlight. Lightness and darkness also added texture and dimension while displaying an eerie and mystifying tone. I combined text and original imagery to create a cohesive narrative.
