The Typeface Playing Cards were created for my typography class in 2020. The objective of this project was to design a unique product using typography. In this case, the Typeface Playing Cards is a deck of 52 cards with a typography twist. It features a typeface for each card, along with the typeface's classification, creation date, foundry, and history summary.
It is said that 90 percent of design is typography, so typeface skills are critical to graphic designers. Often, it is difficult to remember, discern or know how to use a typeface because there is an abundance of them! To many designers, learning about typefaces and their history is also tedious and requires a lot of research. This deck of cards will help designers increase their typeface knowledge in a concise and fun way.
The design was inspired by Apple’s introduction of dark/night mode in September 2019. The overall color scheme is dark with toned-down grays and reds to avoid stark contrast. For the card design, I kept the classic layout of playing cards. I used Bicycle playing cards for comparison but changed the typeface in numbers and descriptions to sans serif. For the back design and the box cover, I typed out “Typefaces” and mirrored it upside down.
